Birdwatching reshapes the brain. And Crete is a magic spot.

Since living in Crete, every year between January and February, I witness something extraordinary. It’s as if the island, with a magical touch, offers a taste of summer in the heart of winter. These are called Alkionides Meres—the Halcyon Days—and they enchant anyone lucky enough to be here, in this corner of the Mediterranean.
In the depths of winter, when one would expect cold winds to dominate, Greece surprises us. These days, characterized by radiant sun, clear skies, and still air, occur between mid-December and early February, offering a glimpse of summer during the harshest season.
But what lies behind this curious phenomenon? What connects science to mythology?
Greek mythology tells us of Alcyone, daughter of Aeolus, the god of winds, and a queen deeply in love with her husband, Ceyx, King of Thessaly. Their union was so pure and perfect that they dared to compare themselves to Zeus and Hera. To punish this hubris, Zeus caused Ceyx’s ship to sink, condemning him to die at sea. Heartbroken, Alcyone threw herself into the waves to join him, but the gods, moved by their eternal love, transformed them both into birds—the kingfishers.
The story doesn’t end there. As a bird, Alcyone continued to lay her eggs in midwinter, but the stormy seas often destroyed her nests.
Zeus, again touched by compassion, ordered Aeolus to calm the winds and let the sun shine for 15 days, so Alcyone could nest in peace. Thus, the “Halcyon Days” were born—a divine gift that brightens even the coldest winters.
While the myth captivates, science clarifies. The Halcyon Days result from specific atmospheric conditions. During winter, Greece’s position in the southeastern Mediterranean creates areas of high pressure. This meteorological pattern produces periods of calm, with mild temperatures and clear skies, despite the season.
Although this phenomenon is fairly regular, it doesn’t occur every year, and its duration can range from a few days to two weeks. Meteorological studies show a higher probability of Halcyon Days between January 15 and January 31. Since living here, I’ve experienced this magical weather every year between January and mid-February. However, in certain years—such as 1947—no trace of the phenomenon was recorded.
While many countries face freezing winters, during the Alkionides Meres, Crete enjoys a serene interlude that feels like a dream.
For me, these days are perfect for immersing myself in Crete’s natural wonders—from the crystal-clear waters of Almyros Beach to the breathtaking views of Mirabello Bay, and the trails leading to traditional villages untouched by mass tourism. This mild climate invites me to stroll along Almyros Beach, hike in the mountains or unique geological spots, or simply sit on my veranda and savor a corner of paradise.
I embrace the silence of nature and the beauty of an island that welcomes even in its coldest months.
It’s also an ideal time for meditation by the sea or in nature, which becomes a beautiful backdrop for inner stillness. The Alkionides Meres are a pause from winter’s chill, an opportunity to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with the present.
The “Halcyon Days,” beyond offering us a climatic respite, remind us of nature’s fragility and the need to protect it. In an age where weather patterns grow increasingly unstable, these days symbolize balance and harmony, urging us to live in tune with the environment.
Whether these bright, tranquil days are a climate’s gift or a blessing from the gods, I don’t know… but the “Halcyon Days” remind me that even in the heart of winter, a ray of summer can shine through.
Just as Zeus calmed the winds to bring peace to Alcyone, these days offer us an oasis of serenity to reconnect with what truly matters.
